1. Who We Are
Katiba ("we", "us", "our") is a civic education application that makes the Kenyan Constitution accessible to every citizen. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the Katiba mobile application or this website.
2. Information We Collect
We collect only what is necessary to provide you with the best possible experience:
- Usage data: anonymous data about which features you use, how long you engage with content, and your reading progress — used solely to improve the app.
- Device information: device model, operating system version, and app version to diagnose bugs and ensure compatibility.
- Preferences: your theme setting, language preference, and notification opt-ins, stored locally on your device.
- Contact form submissions: if you reach out via our website contact form, we collect your name and email address to respond to your enquiry.
We do not collect your name, location, phone number, or any other personally identifiable information unless you voluntarily provide it.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To improve app performance and fix bugs reported through crash analytics.
- To understand which features are most valuable so we can prioritise development.
- To respond to contact form enquiries.
- To send Clause of the Day push notifications, if you have opted in.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond those listed above.
4. Third-Party Services
Katiba integrates the following third-party services:
- Google Gemini AI — used to generate AI summaries of constitutional clauses. Clause text is sent to Gemini for processing; no personal user data is transmitted.
- Firebase Analytics — anonymous, aggregated usage statistics. No personally identifiable information is shared.
- Firebase Crashlytics — crash reports including device model and OS version to help us diagnose issues.
Each of these services is governed by its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them.
5. Data Storage and Security
Reading progress, preferences, and saved content are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain a centralised user database. Anonymous analytics are stored on Firebase servers in accordance with Google's data storage standards.
We implement industry-standard practices to protect any data we do hold, but no method of electronic storage is 100% secure.
6. Children's Privacy
Katiba is suitable for all ages and is designed as an educational tool. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal information to us, please contact us so we can delete it promptly.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of any personal information we hold about you. To exercise these rights, please contact us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
